Chief knight in Roland's service and one of the first people to accompany him to Border Town. He gives the impression of a straightforward and dependable man, used to viewing the world through a soldier's eyes. Caution, loyalty to duty, and distrust of anything unusual at first make him seem like a guardian of the old order, yet behind that outward plainness stand honesty, discipline, and a readiness to follow the lord he comes to acknowledge as his own.

A knight trained in traditional combat and military practice, later able to adapt to the new weapons introduced under Roland's rule. Carter holds a visible place among the prince's closest aides and remains by his side during some of Border Town's most important moments. For all his attachment to familiar ideas of service and order, he is also one of the first to move from suspicion to trust, becoming a steady support for the new authority.
