At seventeen years of age he has a power that he considers more of a curse. In confrontational situations, he apologizes a lot and appears uneasy around violence. Ayato feels he is unlucky to be placed in the same class as Yusei. Whilst he is generally timid, Ayato does not tolerate his glasses being called ugly but having them removed reveals a power that magically induces people to fall in love with him, before their memories go fuzzy and things return to normal once they are put back on. He remembers when he was younger that people always tired of him quickly, but with delinquent guys his power can now get him into trouble and Ayato feels he chose the wrong school to attend. He realizes that his fearful nature stopped him from properly seeing Yusei, and he came to see him as not just a good person but strong, kind, and cool. At that point however, Ayato's lack of self-esteem remains as he feels he is not good enough to stay by his side. However he decides he does want to be with Yusei forever and musters what is for him the courage to say he likes Yusei.
