She is a komainu youkai who protects places of religious worship. She was a komainu statue until the ”Four Seasons Incident” in the 16th Touhou game and is briefly mentioned in Wild and Horned Hermit.

During this incident Okina places a backdoor onto Aunn, who was still a statue at the time. The door then began emitting magical energy which turned Aunn into a sentient youkai. Even while she was a statue she was conscious of her surroundings, and she was able to see and recognize Reimu and others in that state.

She finds places where human faith gathers, like the Hakurei Shrine, Moriya Shrine, Myouren Temple and such, then sticks around and guards the place without being asked. She thinks of it as “volunteer work” though she spends most of her time at the Hakurei Shrine.

She normally doesn't show herself, and even then she only shows her full power when something with hostile intent appears. Unfortunately, she is not that strong and doesn't win often. Her abilities include locating Shintoism and Buddhism as well as seeing through other Komainu statues so she can protect more than one sacred location at the same time.
